Can You Float Your Way to Creative Flow?

Woman in floatation tank

photos in this article courtesy of floatworks

Did you hear the one about the microwave bed?

Eight hours’ sleep in ten minutes!

The nearest thing I’ve found to the microwave bed is a floatation tank. After relaxing for an hour in darkness, silence and what feels like zero gravity, it feels like I’ve been ‘away’ for much, much longer.

What Is a Floatation Tank?

Floatation tank

a chamber filled with the finest supersaturated with epsom salts - which means you can lie retire from and float on the surface, like your own private unfruitful sea. and because the water is maintained at body temperature, after a while you don’t be conscious of it. you’re left with a furor of weightlessness, like floating in space.

You can leave the light on if you want to, but trust me, it’s better if you switch it off. And a pair of earplugs will block out any noises from outside.

Weightlessness. Darkness. Silence.

Bliss.

Eventually, some new age music will filter into your chamber, signalling time to rouse yourself and leave the tank.

When you emerge into the outside world, only an hour will have passed. But inside, it feels like eternity.

Why Float?

There are several theories about how floating works and many benefits are claimed for it. In The Book of Floating, Michael Hutchinson proposes ’seven theories of floating’, including explanations based on antigravity, the left/right brain, neurochemistry, brainwaves and biofeedback.

Benefits claimed include stress relief, detoxification, improvements in various health conditions, enhancing meditation or athletic performance, better sleep - and you’ve guessed it, ‘creativity and imagination’.

during a float, you cast slower brains-waves patterns, known as theta waves, which are normally au fait only during a heartfelt meditation or just before falling asleep and when waking up. this is usually accompanied by sharp comprar levitra imagery, very clear, creative thoughts, sudden insights and inspirations or feelings of profound amiable and joy, induced by the loosing of endorphins, the body’s natural opiates. (the london float centre website)

This matches my own experience fairly closely. For me, there’s a stage of floating which is very similar to falling asleep, when you can experience vivid flashes of hypnagogic imagery. (In my case, it’s more likely to be minor auditory hallucinations, like snatches of voices speaking - but when I asked some friends whether they’d also heard the ‘little voices’ in the tank, they all laughed, so I may be in a minority there.)

Thornton kennels

I can’t say that I’ve experienced any particularly clear thoughts or major insights while actually in the tank, but I definitely think it benefits my creativity, particularly during times when I’ve been floating fairly regularly Sildenafil.

When I come out of the tank my mind is much calmer and clearer than when I went in. It’s almost comparable to the feeling after a weekend meditation retreat. You never realise how busy you’ve been until you stop and relax - and the same goes for switching off your mind, which the tank does very well. So floating helps me approach all my work in a calmer, more considered fashion, which I’m sure enhances my creativity.

I also feel more centred in my body and relaxed after floating, so I can chill out and enjoy life more. If you live in the country, the effect may not be so dramatic, but for city dwellers like me, floating can be a wonderful antidote to the hustle and bustle of urban life.

For these reasons, I think floating could be helpful if you’re experiencing a creative block, particularly the kind brought on by working too long and trying too hard. I’ve not tried it under these circumstances, but if you’ve been tearing your hair out trying to crack a brief or write the next chapter of your novel, an hour in a floatation tank could be the perfect creative tonic.

If I’ve whetted your appetite for floating, there may well be a float centre in your nearest city where you can try it. Here in London, I’ve floated at Floatworks (who kindly supplied the photographs for this article) and The London Float Centre, both of which provide excellent facilities in a relaxed atmosphere.

Have You Ever Floated?

If so - did you find it beneficial?

Do you think it boosted your creativity?

If not - is it something you

Hands on: Google Earth 5.0 goes under the sea, back in time

Google Earth 5.0 goes under the sea, back in time

Google announced a new version of Google Earth today with features that focus on what is under our ocean, in our past, and above our heads. Ars Technica did some vicarious adventuring to check out the new features.

Google Earth 5.0 (beta) is available for Mac OS X, Windows compra viagra online, and Linux users, though we should note that Google has become even more aggressive with the installation of its software update mechanism. Instead of covertly installing the software like it has in the past or offering the option to disable said updater like it should, Google now presents a dialog that forces the user to agree to the software license and installation of a phantom software update tool that cannot be uninstalled if the user wants to run Google Earth. But let’s not dwell on the negatives, because there is a lot to love about this new version.

Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder

highly recommended

It wasn’t the first Fox series to be canceled too early (and it certainly won’t be the last), but the demise of Matt Groening’s Futurama proved to be slow and steady. Not in quality, of course: this tale of a man frozen for a millennium only got funnier as the series progressed, though network support dwindled during its four-year lifespan. As the Simpsons machine rolled on, Futurama’s timeslot was shuffled around; for a time, the series’ broadcast directly followed Groening’s most famous creation, but it didn’t last long. The series was eventually cancelled in August of 2003, though subsequent DVD releases (broken into four “volumes”, due to the erratic broadcast schedule) reinforced Futurama’s rabid fanbase.

As creations like Fox’s own Family Guy would prove, s…Read the entire review

Red Hook Sugar Refinery Lives On

Feeling a pang of nostalgia for the former Revere Sugar Dome and factory in Red Hook? The site may have been leveled, but the spirit of it lives on. Gowanus Lounge received a photo (above right) from Adam Suerte of Brooklyn Tattoo, along with the story of a man and his wife who were leaving their home in Red Hook for Puerto Rico. “One of their favorite views down by the water was of the Revere Sugar Refinery. So, being a fan of my style, he asked me to do a drawing of the refinery, then tattoo it on him. And so it was.” What demolished building would you have permanently placed on your skin?

Danity Kane Have Split Up, Dawn Richard Says

‘It’s devastating for me,’ Richard says of the ‘Making the Band’ group’s dissolution.By Jocelyn Vena

dawn richard photo: mtv news

When “Making the Band” returns on February 12, fans already know two former members will be missing: Aubrey O’Day and D. Woods, who were dismissed from the group by Diddy last season. But they’ll probably be surprised that Shannon Bex isn’t there either, which apparently means the end of the band.

“As of right now, [Danity Kane doesn't exist],” Dawn Richard told MTV News on Wednesday (January 28). “It’s devastating for me.”

“You’ll see me and Drea [Aundrea Fimbres] try and pick up the pieces on our own [on this season's show] — pieces that we didn’t even make,” she continued. “We didn’t even break it and we’re trying to sweep it up ourselves. Puff invited all the girls to come back on this season and they chose not to. Only two of us showed up. That’s fine if that’s the choice.

“It changes [our situation] completely,” she said. “We have fans out there who love Danity Kane. We love Danity Kane. It’s hard. We’re sitting here trying to make sense of it now. It’s hard. We’re put in this position that we didn’t ask to be in and we’re being told to fix it.”

Richard said that Bex apparently made the decision not to show up for the season on her own.

“I don’t know why [Bex left]. I think she’s just happy. I don’t want to even try to answer it ’cause that’s not fair to her. I haven’t [spoken to her] but I heard she’s doing well with her husband and she got a house. I love her, but I don’t know.”

Bex was coy about the issue in an interview published earlier this week.

Richard admitted that she was as surprised as anyone that she and Drea were the only members on the set. “We are the only two that showed up,” she said. “The thing about it … I thought we were all going to come back and talk, or maybe if Aubrey didn’t come back, ’cause I don’t know how Puff was feeling about that, if the four of us got together. I didn’t know what to expect. I just know I got off the plane and found out I was the only one there and Drea came the next day.”

Shirley of hollywood

And although Fimbres and Richard were both present for the taping of the show, it seems that Richard spent a lot of her time hanging out with fellow “MTB” castmates Day 26 trying to make the best of the situation.

“I was there every day, on my own. Sometimes Drea was there, sometimes she wasn’t, ’cause she had to go fix some stuff at home,” she said. “So it was me and six guys, which is great ’cause I’m a guy girl! It was fun. [But] it was very hard not knowing what the next step was going to be.”

One thing that Richard is certain of is her disbelief at everything that’s happened with Danity Kane in the last few months, which not only included the two dismissals but also news about Aubrey O’Day’s sexuality and her forthcoming Playboy spread.

“I’m still surprised at it all. I’m still trying to recover from the first fire,” she said. “So I’m still confused. I still don’t know. I’m just being so honest. I have no idea.”

A spokesperson for Diddy and Danity Kane’s rep at Atlantic Records had no comment.

MTV News will have lots more from our interview with Dawn Richard in the coming days.

Viewers can see everything unfold on the next season of “Making the Band,” which premieres on February 12.
